Moving on, ornamental plants deserve special attention because, as already mentioned, they act as hosts and carriers, certainly for Phytophthora strains and possibly for others. This brings the need to eradicate rhododendron into sharp focus. It is an invasive, non-native species doing great damage in the UK. Localised efforts are being made to do this – but not enough. It also brings the home gardener firmly into the spotlight as much can be done in our suburbs to control the spread of disease.
